In the Pursuit of Happiness

As part of a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association, the Lewis Egerton Smoot Memorial Library is holding a "Pursuit of Happiness" Photography Contest.

  • Entries should be a standard 4 X 6 size, no digital submissions.
  • Entries may be either color or black and white.
  • Entries must be original—no professional photos.
  • Entries are due by 5 p.m. Thursday, January 31.
  • The contest is open to all ages.
  • Photos may be on display in the library.
  • Photos must include an entry form. See display for form.
  • Entries will be judged by age group—0 to 6, 7-12, 13-17, and 18 and up.
  • Entries will be judged according to photo quality and originality.
  • The L.E. Smoot Library staff will make all attempts to return the photos, but cannot guarantee their return.

Got the Winter Blues?

January 15th at 7 p.m. Winter Blues Night...featuring duo of Andra Faye and Chris Jones.
Andra is known for her powerful vocals and talents on numerous stringed instruments, especially the blues mandolin. She has recorded and performed nationally and internationally with Saffire--The Uppity Blues Women since 1992.

Lost

The "Lost on Library Island" program will be held on Friday, July 20 at 5:30 p.m. The scavenger-type program is for teens 12 to 18. All teens must be picked up by 6:45 p.m.

Going Buggy

Puppeteer Jeanne Wall will present "Going Buggy" on Thursday, July 19 at 2 p.m. as part of the 2007 Summer Reading Program. The event will feature storytelling, puppetry, and music to bring to life three folk tales about insects. The event is free and open to the public.

Lost in Fantasy

King George teens made sun catchers during the Lost in...Fantasy program on Tuesday, July 10. The fourth event of the Teen Summer Reading Program allowed teens to show their creativity. The fifth event will be held on Friday, July 20 at 5:30 p.m. and will feature a scavenger hunt in the library. It is open to teens ages 11 to 18.

A "Wild" Time

The Wildlife Center of Virginia will be at the library on July 12th as part of the 2007 Summer Reading Program. The Center will present the program entitled "A Journey Down the Appalachian Trail and will feature some of Virginia's wild animals. The program will start at 2 p.m. and is free to the public.

A Day at the Beach

As part of the 2007 Summer Reading Program, the Youth Services Department held a Beach Party for King George readers. The program featured carnival games with a beach theme, such as a hula contest and lei making. Young readers also dug for treasure.
